Global Satellite Services Business Takes First Steps Toward Decarbonization
Client
The largest and most trusted integrated satellite and terrestrial network in the world, connecting people, businesses, and communities. With 15 locations and 1,790 employees, the satellite management company serves governments, corporations, and billions of people every day.
Challenge
The company needed to develop and implement a comprehensive and reliable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reporting solution as quickly as possible. The company knew it needed to start by understanding and tracking its current scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions. Given the complexities involved in the data collection process, the short timeframe, and the pressing need for accurate and verifiable data, the company knew it needed a trusted consultant to help expedite a comprehensive and reliable data collection and reporting process.
Solution
The company partnered with SIB’s energy experts, Cost Control Associates, to streamline the GHG reporting process from end to end beginning with data collection. Traditionally, this is one of the most challenging and time-consuming aspects of the effort as the needed utility, operations, and facilities data comes from disparate locations and sources within the organization. Our energy team set clear expectations for this step, and the client’s use of a robust utility bill payment system coupled with a high level of engagement from its team accelerated the effort. The team quickly gathered the required scope 1 and scope 2 emissions data including utility, generator, fleet, and transportation data. Our energy team cleaned and analyzed the data, delivering a summary report of scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions with specific views by emissions source. This provided the company board of directors with reports for leaders to track and oversee emissions reduction efforts over time.
Results
Quantifying scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions data allows the company to meet its investors’ and customers’ request for transparency. By benchmarking the results against publicly available information from their competitors, we helped them understand how its emissions compare to its peers and recognize that it already outperformed many competitors in this area. This knowledge is enabling new corporate decarbonization strategies and roadmaps while helping to inform ongoing discussions and decisions around potential renewable energy options.
Highlights:
- Quantified scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions.
- Created reports for emissions reduction tracking and oversight.
- Enabled peer benchmarking.
- Informed decarbonization strategy.
